Home Design: Why Design a Patio?

One of the greatest things about owning a home is being able to share it through entertaining. If you’re looking to expand your living space and create a stunning opportunity for more company and recreation, it’s time to start thinking about designing a patio.

Patios are a wonderful, low-stress, easy way to expand your square footage. You might be wondering why a patio would be any better than adding a deck onto the house. First, if you’re thinking of installing a deck make sure to check with local requirements for building something that is affixed to the house. With a patio, you do not need to worry about setbacks from your neighbor's lot line like you do with a deck. In my experience, a patio can save you time, money and maintenance costs down the line.

Patios are typically a stone base that you can expand on. Stone, instead of a wood deck, is going to last longer because it’s less susceptible to damage from inclement weather or regular wear and tear. Maintenance is a breeze and you won’t have to worry about upkeep. Your patio will be useful in at least 3 seasons with the addition of a sunshade in the hot summer, or a heater in the fall.

Your patio design is only limited by your imagination! Whether you’ve planned a midweek date night for two or a summer soirée, a patio is a great space to make the vision come to life. If you’re looking to create a cozy ambiance with plenty of privacy, a fence or well-placed shrubbery will not only provide that, but will add to the overall look.

Once you start creating your patio, you might feel hesitant about it being too large. Adding a dining table, comfortable couch seating, a fire pit, and some cantina lights transform your backyard into an oasis. The addition of furniture brings the space in nice and tight, keeping it warm and inviting while still maintaining enough comfortable space to move around.

A patio is going to expand your living space in ways you couldn’t imagine. For those working at home, you just created another quiet space after a long day or another place to enjoy a work meeting. Large families will love the extra space to spend time outside. The chef of the family has a great opportunity to expand their cooking area with plenty of space for anything from a small grill to a fully outfitted outdoor kitchen.

The opportunities are endless, now and in the future. Adding a patio to your backyard increases your home’s value. By extending the livable space, you’ll boost value and appeal to potential buyers if you decide to sell. The ways you’ll enjoy your patio design are the same ways the new owners will as well. Think of the potential, and get started!
