Home Design & The New School Year

It’s back-to-school season once again, and as a parent you want to make the transition as smooth as possible for the whole family! Whether you’re considering buying a new home, upgrading your current one, or just making some small changes to the way you function in your space, it’s important to incorporate your daily routine into your home’s design. How can you use your space wisely, and make this school year a breeze? Let’s take a look at some easy tips!

Every morning of the school year has the same struggles. Sometimes finding everything you need to get everyone out the door and on the bus can be challenging if there isn’t a designated spot for it. Your entryway or mudroom is a great place to make your home base for starting the day. Backpacks, shoes, keys and all other essentials being easily accessible and in the same space can streamline your morning routine. Consider installing cubbies and hooks where every morning your kids know exactly where their school essentials are. When they arrive home from a long day, make sure everyone restores their essentials back to their designated spot, so the next morning you aren’t on the search for someone’s shoe or lost backpack! Many schools are requiring safety items like masks or hand sanitizers. Having a stock of these items in that area by the door is a great way to remember to grab them every morning.

When the kids arrive home from school, they’re ravenous! Having prepared snacks, or a designated after-school snack area can keep them in a healthy routine of grabbing their own snacks and getting right to their homework. A dedicated homework station is a great way to utilize your home’s space. It doesn’t have to necessarily be in the family office or your child’s bedroom, but having a designated spot can help your child — and you — feel settled in a routine. If you have a whole room designated for schoolwork or just a corner of the bedroom, make it stand out! Having a spacious desk, a comfortable chair, and school supplies within arms’ reach can keep your child-focused. If your child needs to mix it up, consider keeping supplies in a movable cart they can bring with them into whatever room they need.

Transitioning into the school year, and growing up, is a big deal for you and your children! They are growing up and their habits and likes are changing. So change their rooms with them for a little fun! Switching paint colors, moving furniture around, or swapping in some new bedding can make them feel like they have a brand new room.

Refreshing your living space to function with you and your family as you start the school year is so important. It can be frustrating trying to make a space work that doesn’t by design. Start small, and you’ll see how great a difference a smart design can make!
